Out of Context - Etty Elbaz Griffioen
Wednesday November 4, 2009 - Saturday January 27, 2010

Out of Context is the first solo exhibition by Etty Elbaz Griffioen. It shows works from 2002-2009. The works show a combination of craft materials, like henna and modeling clay, that are uncommon for paintings. As a daughter of parents who moved from Marokko to Jeruzalem, Etty grew up in the Middle-East. Now she lives and works in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. The contrast between the Middle East and Amsterdam has been an important inspiration and functions as a framework to contruct a home.

Etty Elbaz Griffioen has been born in Jeruzalem, studied art at the "Hamidrasha" Ramat Hasharon and studied Theater at the university of Tel Aviv. She worked as a set designer and makeup artist for film and TV, as well as a jewellery and event designer. For the past ten years she researched the tradition and use of henna; she teaches and lectures about this subject. She took part in the Dutch project El Hema, where she presented two designs: Henna Hagelslag and Hamsa Colours (honorable mention). Both have been recently exhibited at the Jewish Historical Children's Museum, during the exhibition Morocco.
